What Are Senna Leaves and How They Aid in Your Digestion

If you study detox teas carefully, you will often find Senna leaves as one of its main ingredients. Senna leaves have been an effective laxative component of teas when it comes to relieving constipation. While teas contain them as one ingredient, you can also take it independently.

The FDA has approved the use of these potent leaves in treating constipation. However, using it for longer than 10 days may give some unpleasant side effects.

This article will tell you more about these leaves and how they can benefit and affect your health.

Understanding Senna Leaves’ History

Senna is a perennial plant that belongs to the legume family. The plant is commonly found in North Africa and the Middle East, but the leaves are also mostly seen in China and India.

Arabian physicians first used the senna leaves in the 9th century. They used to make teas out of them and prescribe them as laxatives for patients with intestinal problems.

Senna has many benefits for the body. It can deal with immunity, indigestion, and constipation problems. It can also help patients deal with weight loss, hair issues, and skin issues.

More on the Digestion Benefits of Senna Leaves

  • Relieves Constipation

Senna leaves are effective in relieving constipation due to its compounds called sennosides. These compounds stimulate contractions in the intestines. These muscular contractions enable stool movement through the bowels, leading to constipation relief.

The sennosides are also responsible for secreting water in the colon. This liquid helps soften the stool in return and increases its mass, making it easier to let out.

How to Use Senna Leaves as a Laxative:

Take 20 to 60 milligrams of sennosides every day. Limit your intake for a maximum of 10 days.

  • Reduction of Inflammation

According to a study, senna leaves contain resveratrol, a natural anti-inflammatory compound. This property enabled senna leaves to reduce widespread and chronic inflammation in the body.

However, you should note that this leaf has a limitation of usage, which makes it less effective for chronic care.

The Side Effects of Senna Leaves

  • When senna leaves act as a laxative, you experience abdominal pain, cramping, and diarrhea.
  • Over time, it can cause fluid loss and electrolyte imbalance. When this happens, you will feel lightheaded for a while.

What To Keep in Mind When Using These Leaves

  • When taking senna leaves, consider drinking beverages fortified with electrolytes or taking electrolyte supplements with it. Doing so will reduce the risk of fluid loss.
  • Do not use senna leaves too often. When your body gets used to its capabilities, your bowels will become dependent on it. Instead of helping you have a smooth bowel process, you may have a harder experience doing it.
  • Avoid taking senna when you have any of the following:
    • Appendicitis
    • Ulcerative colitis
    • Intestinal obstruction
    • Crohn’s disease
    • And other inflammatory bowel diseases
These conditions are often treated with diuretic medications that remove potassium from your body. Regular usage of senna leaves also has the same effect.
  • If you are on blood-thinning medications, such as warfarin, take precautions when using senna. The leaves can cause diarrhea, which can affect and interfere with your body’s absorption of vitamin K. It can also increase your risk of uncontrolled bleeding.
  • Using senna can make contraceptives less effective. Its properties interact with estrogen forms in contraceptives like birth control pills, rings, or patches.

Senna leaves have beneficial properties that can aid one’s intestinal issues. Like any other supplements and medicines, they should be taken in moderation.

As noted above, one must limit their intake of these potent leaves to up to 10 days to avoid complications. Before using any products or treatments, make sure to do your research.
